The Burns Club of Launceston  This club is the only Burns club in the island state of Tasmania that is affiliated with the World Federation. We celebrate Burns Night each January 25th with the traditional Burns Supper, music, poetry and dancing. We also have a Christmas in Winter celebration.
Deloraine, Tasmania, Australia  Our club is based at Deloraine, a small town which is 49 k (30 miles) from the city of Launceston. Deloraine in Tasmania was named after Deloraine in Scotland.  Relatives of Sir Walter Scott were surveyors in the early European settlement of Tasmania (then Van Diemen's Land) and Thomas Scott, survveyor, named Deloraine in honour of the Earl of Deloraine and the lands of Deloraine featured in the poem "The Lay of the Last Minstrel" by his kinsman Sir Walter Scott. It is interesting that many of the geographical features of our Deloraine resemble those of Scotland's Deloraine, including a prominent mountain, Quamby Bluff. The Duke of Buccleugh in the "Lands of Deloraine", Scotland, still holds the secondary title of Earl of Deloraine.
Tasmania - Scotland Connections The links between Tasmania and Scotland are very strong, Many, many Scots migrated to Tasmania and a look at our phone book will testify to the large number of Scottish surnames. There are also many towns and properties named after places in Scotland: Perth, Ross, Roseneath, Barra, Skye Farm, Lochiel, Lachlan, to name just a few. As well, we are blessed with many excellent pipe bands and  Scottish dancing at social and competition levels is prevalent.  Many families perpetuate Scottish customs and songs.
