Tasmanian Jazz Archive News 1st July 2005
- from Veronica Lyons.
Today I had the pleasure of attending the official opening of the new
Community History Museum at the Inveresk site of the Queen Victoria Museum
and Art Gallery. The facilities are very impressive and worth the long
wait.
To access the material in the Tasmanian Jazz Archive, you firstly need
to consult the Collection Guide, either at Inveresk or by phoning the staff
on 6323 3777. I can also search my copy of the Guide for you. You then
need to make an appointment so the staff can get the relevant material
out of the store for you. Opening hours are 10am to 4pm, Monday to Thursday.
Rhonda Hamilton is the Curator, and the staff are Ross and Danielle.
The annual forum of the Australian Jazz Archive National Council, planned
for this month in Canberra, has been postponed due the withdrawal of funding
for the delegates' travel costs, previously provided by ScreenSound. The
meeting format may be altered to a cheaper option such as a tele-conference
or e-mailing of reports. This is not a downgrading of ScreenSound's commitment
to the Australian Jazz Archive, but general cost-cutting on their part.
I am still seeking material for the Archive. I'm sure there are Tasmanian
musicians and bands who are not represented at all, and I need people all
over the state to track down recordings, photos, interviews etc. , from
the early Tasmanian jazz days to the present time. I prefer that material
comes to me so I can document it fully, and then take it to the Museum
in batches.

A REPORT FROM PETER COLEMAN - 19 March 2001.
The annual meeting of the Australian Jazz Archive National Council was
held in Canberra at the National Screensound Archive during February 2001,
attended by P.C., where the previous years achievements were reviewed state
by state.
It is pleasing to report that Tasmania received plaudits from both
the A.J.A.N.C. and Screensound Australia for our activity and endeavors
in gaining National recognition for both our well known, and also our unheralded
jazz musicians.
Following Tasmania’s appointment of Anna Barns, it was also decided that nationally a young person would be groomed from each state to attend the national meeting on a rotation basis. SSA were very happy with this project and it was decided that Anna will be invited to Canberra in February 2002. SSA are to investigate funding for Anna's visit. SSA are currently developing a web site that will eventually present photographs and 30 second sound bites of Australian Jazz musicians.
JAZZTAS.
We are now building up to the opening of the Queen Victoria museum
campus at Inveresk in November 2001 where the JazzTas Archive will be housed
(our area will not be ready at the official opening). The collection now
numbers approximately 450 pieces including newsletters. The recent inclusion
of the late Ted Herron’s trumpet will be one of the centre pieces of the
collection together with memorabilia of Tom Pickering and Ian Pearce and
all other well known musicians.
It is envisaged that we will have a small centre piece illuminated display case featuring a jazz object/video and or sound bite that will be changed regularly, and there will also be a plaque known as THE HALL OF JAZZ, featuring those Tasmanian musicians who have received the Satchmo award. Bruce Hayley with the Suncoast Jazz Club are helping to fund this display piece so that the Tasmanian Jazz scene will be presented in a way that is very acceptable to us and the Q.V.M.
It is great that we have Anna Barns working in our Archive and that
JazzTas has a core collection that will be built on – it is now up to the
Jazz Clubs and members tp be aware of the Archive now that the ground work
has been accomplished and to advise and collect material {current posters,
newspaper clippings, advertisements, photographs etc}. In a short time
these will be part of our history. Southern Tasmania is a little under
represented and additional help in this area is needed.
Discussions are also taking place that, at the launch of the
Q.V.M. new campus, we could do a similar concert as we did at the launch
of JazzTas in October of last year. As we have a fully professional, public
funded arena to present our wares, it is up to us to grab this opportunity
and make it the most complete state Archives in Australia, something that
is completely within our grasp.
