From Recent NEWSLETTERS
Dont forget that because of our tiny population,
we can only survive as a jazz club if nearly EVERYONE attends our events.
Please check also that you have paid your 2006
subscription of $10 or $18 for two members at the same address.
MIX EM UP
The year has been different because the Committee decided not to stick
to the regular days, but to mix them up, seeking warmer weather for our
events. We hope to have a few open air sessions this summer and I will
let you know dates and bands asap. I would love to have one Sunday arvo
in the park using the Band Rotunda and one of the Big Bands etc. It would
be hard getting money in the open but at least we could be sure of our
members paying, and the rest would be a good promotion for jazz in general
& DJC. What do you think? Please let me have any suggestions.

The late Ngaire James, who often did some great vocals for us, served on
the C'ttee for several years and did the door job for years, performing
with Don Ives at DJC in May 2004. |

DELORAINE JAZZ CLUB HISTORY
- by Geoff Woods 9/5/2003 (in brief)
The club was formed after Geoff Woods put notices
around the town to see how many might be interested. About 36 people met
in the Dining Room of the Deloraine Hotel at 6.00pm Thursday July 8th 1999
to form the club.
Elections resulted in
President Geoff Woods, Sec/Treas. Susan Barter,
Vice Pres Kath Evans.
Committee Ken Philpott, Bevan Badcock, Mal Greenop,
Ngaire Greenop.
This has been put together hastily to be able
to hand in some records and/or copies of what we have been doing with/for
jazz over the last 4 years for the JAZZ ARCHIVES of Tasmania. Some of our
records are missing because we never intended to be a great accumulator
of paperwork. When I look back I am struck by how much work has gone in
to the newsletters and posters, and of how many we still have a copy.
I have drawn up the list of bands etc as accurately
as possible, but not all records remain.
1999
8th July First meeting in the Dining Room of
the Deloraine Hotel. Officers elected and some music played on my large
Sony 3 in 1.
12th Aug Counter meals, CDs and tapes in
the Dining Room on Sony.
16th Sep Our first LIVE artist, WAXXY PUFFLER,
Lyell Wells, Jazz and Swing Writers. Lyell played and sang a prepared
program beautifully in his very relaxed style, which everyone loved. This
was also our first evening in the Catching Pen which the Green family had
upgraded by $35,000.
30 & 31st Oct - DELORAINE JAZZ FESTIVAL which
ran 2 days of the Long Weekend. We must have been mad to attempt it, during
the Craft Fair, when we and most others were tired out from other
things we were running. However it ran beautifully and attracted full houses
in the Catching Pen.
THE CAKEWALKING BABIES played on the Saturday
night 30th
TE JAZZMANIANS played on the Sunday night. Ngaire
Greenop sang about 3 numbers with the band and Chas Canden played harmonica
with them 2 numbers.

I DONT LIKE JAZZ
How often do you hear someone say the above? And yet many TV adverts
have jazz playing in the background, hotel lobbies frequently have jazz
as their chosen music, many supermarkets and other shops use jazz for their
speaker music, because they think it is the best music to put customers
into a good frame of mind. Gala events outdoor and indoor often use jazz
for their music. Jazz is a happy, easy to listen to, sparkling, entertaining
sound and businesses know it. Many people have the wrong idea of jazz,
but once they hear a little of it theyre happy with it.

A NIGHT IN THE CATCHING PEN
at the Deloraine Hotel

General view of a club night during 2000, taken from the stage. The bar
is round to the right far end, which is less intrusive on the jazz. Toilets
are up the back to the left where you can see the handrail.Dance area is
up the front bottom right. If it has a fault, it has been too cold in the
middle of winter, June - August.
OUR USUAL TIMES
Second Friday of each month with an occasional Sunday 1-4pm (such as
April 8th 2001)
6.00 Doors open & drinks and meals orders begin
