DEVONPORT
JAZZ
Last weekend in July - Devonport
Jazz
Devonport Jazz, now in its seventh year, mixes music and dance, art and film and is the hottest winter event of the year! There is something for all musical tastes. Swing, trad, blues, latin and be-bop will have you kicking up your heels or kicking back and relaxing at the many concerts over the weekend.
Our feature concert, “A Tribute to the Music of Duke Ellington” will showcase some of the festival headline acts such as Melbourne’s Julie O’Hara, Sydney saxophonist and vocalist Ben Jones, the fantastically talented multi instrumentalist Michael McQuaid.
Other highlights include Saturday evening’s Dinner Dance at Reece High School with the delightful Julie O’Hara and her swing and blues band, Bopkick.
Boogie Woogie pianist Jan Preston will also feature throughout the weekend, as will multi-award winner Andrea Keller. The best of Tasmania’s bands will also be on show with performances by the Red Hot Roosters, Bruny Island New Orleans Jazz Band and the Ross Challender Big Band.
With concerts by the best of Mainland and Tasmanian jazz bands in over eighteen venues you can have your jazz served with breakfast or brunch, dinner and lunch.
Put the last weekend in July
on your calendar and make Devonport your destination for a wonderful weekend
away.
I hope you enjoy our first Devonport
Jazz newsletter.

Music of Duke Ellington

Duke’s favourites will be performed
by the cream of the festival's artists including Julie O’Hara, Ben Jones,
Michael McQuaid, Andrea Keller, Eugene Ball, Allan Browne, Nick Haywood
and Viktor Zappner. Duke Ellington is regarded as being one of the greatest
American composers – alongside with Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein.
Among jazz musicians he is, together with Thelonious Monk, certainly the
most important jazz composer. From his early instrumental and orchestral
pieces, through to his song writing and some extended compositions, the
quality of his music is astounding. Our concert will try to illustrate
his greatness as a composer, while showing how improvisation can be an
integral part of it.

Elsa sent me this extra comment
-"last year 2002 was our inaugural event which luckily went so well that
it is easier to get support the second time around. While Council certainly
underwrites this event, coordinates, promotes the event the concept
is that we do this in partnership with local business who make a contribution
towards entertainment cost and where appropriate combine entertainment
with meals etc. Regards, Elsa."
