ERIC HOLROYD BEREAVEMENT
Sorry to hear that Eric Holroyd's wife, Jean, died on Saturday at 7.30am
in a palliative care hospice where she received lovely care. I know that
all our Tasmanian jazz fans would want to pass on their condolences and
best wishes to Eric who has performed so often and so well in Tasmania.
JOE SAILING OUT
Joe Blake and Adrienne of the Signal Station Restaurant at Mt Nelson,
will be changing the white tablecloths for white sails in the sunset in
a couple of months if they can tidy up business changeover details. They
have bought a 46ft yacht which is now awaiting them in Panama. Joe has
for sale a range of musical instruments and recording gear which I have
listed on the Tasjazz Noticeboard, but you haven't got long because they
hope to be gone by mid March. Two pianos have already sold.
INTERNET I.D.
Watch your electronic details everyone. Recently I had someone suddenly
take over my Tasjazz site for a few days before I wasable to right everything.
(Let me know if you are having any trouble getting to Tasjazz.)
Just a few days ago I received a most unusual and out-of-character
email from Teresa Beck Swindale, and it turned out someone had done a similar
thing to her. She told me
"Somehow this commercial company has tapped into my yahoo address database
and sent a spam around to all my addresses; I'm most annoyed now that I
see how far it has spread. My apologies, it's very frustrating."
Since then I went to register for some download and I noticed that
as well as my email address they wanted my date of birth. Immediately I
aborted the request for the download, because they have no need to know
that personal bit of I.D. which they might be able to use to pretend they
are me at some time.
CLARENCE JAZZ FESTIVAL
I have just finished updating the CJF details for 2008, as sent to
me by Lyndall Edwards, Events and Publications Officer 03 6245 8651.
This year seems to follow the tried and true recipe and I note that
the guest artist George Washingmachine returns - a sure winner!
KALAMUNDA BAND
You might remember the Kalamunda Youth Swing Band from WA from when
they toured Tassie in 2004. They are touring in Queensland right now, so
I sent them a reminder that January is the wrong time for Qld, but that
we have the best weather at this time.
Bruce Weber wrote back, agreeing, and saying that
"Weather reports are LOUSY in Brisbane. Loved the tour of Tassie, I
reckon we should tour again in 2010."
Keep it in mind in case you would like them in your area. They were
really excellent. We had them at Glendalough in Deloraine and gave them
a barbecue lunch ready for a Sunday afternoon of great music.
FROM OLD NEWSLETTERS &TASJAZZ
The Hoodangers from Melbourne will be in Hobart area April 18
- 20, 2008. Did HJC take them up?
Adam Pache : I am a drummer originally from Sydney. I have been
living in New York for just over 2 years, and will be returning to Australia
in April for a tour with Norwegian born, New York based guitarist Bjørn
Solli, and Australian born, New York based bass player Jasper Leak. We
are hoping you might be able to help us find some gigs in Tasmania between
April 3rd and the 16th. It would be great to do a workshop or two there
as well. We all have experience teaching and in workshop situations.
I have had word of a few gigs from Kevin Kosky but as the job and musician description didn't seem to fit any of the Tasjazz musicians I haven't passed them on - certainly will as soon as I see something which I think would suit someone here.
I will do a Diary and Noticeboard update so you had better check my accuracy for anything in which you are involved. Check the website Tasjazz for more details about any of the above - Geoff

Hello to all jazzers. Hope you are having a Happy
Christmas and that New Year will be good to you. I have tried to do a round-up
of some of the many things which have crossed my desk lately, with DJCs
New Years Eve one of the most pressing (for me).
NEW YEARS EVE
The number for this is already around 75 booked and the cut off point
is 90, so it is important that you contribute and book this week if you
hope to come Remember

The HOODANGERS, a really well known group which comes from Melbourne and has toured Europe three times successfully, is coming to Tassie April 18 20th next year. You might have to go to Hobart to hear them, but I will let you know. They have Sunday afternoon not booked but I think Hobart might take that up.
ERIC HOLROYD
You will be sad to hear that Erics wife, Jean, is not well and will
have to undergo extensive treatment. We wish them well in what is a very
stressful time.
TRIO WANTS TO VISIT 10 12 April 2008
Adam Pache, a drummer originally from Sydney, has been living in New
York for just over 2 years, and will be returning to Australia in April
for a tour with Norwegian born, New York based guitarist Bjørn Solli,
and Australian born, New York based bass player Jasper Leak. They are hoping
for some gigs in Tasmania between April 3rd and the 16th, including a workshop
or two there as well. They all have experience teaching and in workshop
situations. The best dates for Tassie - 11th and 12th April 2008
You can hear some of Bjørn's music at the following websites:
http://www.myspace.com/bjornsolli http://www.myspace.com/solidjazz
http://www.solidjazz.com
There are 3 in the band - guitar, double bass, drums playing modern-mainstream
jazz. Bjørn is also
a good singer... they would be happy to do some gigs with him singing
if that will help "sell" a band to a venue. You can hear his vocal tracks
at http://www.myspace.com/croonerextraordinairebvsolli
They are prepared to cover their flights. If possible, it would
be great to have accommodation covered by the venue or the local jazz society.
At most other places they are getting around $600 for the trio per performance,
but if that is unrealistic for Tasmania they are willing to be flexible
if they can have at least two gigs and one workshop there. Is any club
or venue interested in a gig?
BURNIE ON THURSDAY NIGHTS

DOOR the CAFÉ, 254 Mount Street, Upper Burnie, featuring:

Howroyd on saxophones & trumpet and Matthew Ives on drums.

.
Janet Seidel is about to apply for funding
for the band for some Australian tours. She says:
I've just released a CD with Joe Chindamo in Japan which will be launched
in Australia 2008 and we are thinking of doing a National Tour in July-August
2008. Any help with venues and promoters in Tasmania would be gratefully
accepted as we have to get our application in by the mid-December 2007.
Best wishes, Janet Seidel 0412 495347 http://www.janetseidel.com/
TASJAZZ ADDRESS -
Since writing emails about TASJAZZ address, I have talked to my web

which is officially correct. But they reckon either will work. Please let

Dodo Sosoka's tour of Australia
- cancelled
Viktor has advised that due to the delay with
obtaining Australian visas, Dodo Sosoka's tour of Australia had to
be cancelled. Instaed, here in Tasmania, 'Bruny Island New Orleans Jazz
Band' will be playing on their date (Thursday 25 October) at the Stage
Door Cafe in Burnie and the Centennial Hotel in Launceston during its Mini-Jazz
Festival on Friday 26 October. The planned gig at the D'port Entertainment
Centre on Saturday October 27 is simply being cancelled. As for the one
on Thursday 24 October at the Lizbon Bar in Hobart I was not yet able to
let them know about it - no one picks up the phone.
This a great pity for all concerned. I will continue
to update the TASJAZZ web site as the changes come in. Could someone please
check that Lizbon Bar knows and perhaps a phone number check is in order.

TASJAZZ UPDATE 2/10/07 - Some new
items which you might want to check out.
......................................................................................................................................................................
VENUES PAGE
You might like to help a number of people by
contributing ideas to the VENUES page of Tasjazz. It helps hoteliers, members,
musicians, your club and many more. I have just written to the AHA with
a little paragraph (below) which might show the thinking:-
"Hi,
You might like to offer your members something
free.
It's free because for the last 10 years I have
been doing this voluntarily, simply because I like our JAZZ MUSIC and I
know thousands all over Australia love their jazz and other music too.
Below is a suggested suitable, briefly worded piece which you might like
to include in your newsletter.
FREE PUBLICITY
If you have a hotel in Tasmania and you have
a venue suitable for music and dancing please contact me at TASJAZZ. I
can offer you free publicity for any events you have coming up with jazz
music either for listening, dining, dancing etc. My VENUES list on the
Tasjazz web site is seen by many others who may want a venue for similar
purposes including rock, blues, pop, sales events, weddings, staff training,
and of course jazz. Let me help you find more customers by listing your
venue - free. Just send brief details to Geoff Woods, Tasjazz, gwoods@tassie.net.au
and check out the website at http://www.tasjazz.ii.net/
I hope you see this as a way of helping AHA members
Cheers
Geoff Woods"

BAND LEADERS
I know you are busy but so am I, and I need your
help keeping your list of players and your contact details up to date so
that if someone wants your band for a gig they are not stuffed around.
If they go to my list of Tasmanian Jazz Bands on Tasjazz and the phone
no. is wrong they won't come back and you and I both lose out. I might
double the price I charge if you don't help a little more!

CRUISE SHIP CONTRACT
Not jazz but might interest some of our versatile
musos - Kevin Kosky says - We have a new opportunity for a cruise ship
contract, for a "Pop Top 40" Duo leaving Sydney on October 24th. The duo
should include vocals, and at least one live instrument of either keyboards,
bass, guitar or sax. Backing tracks would be very advantageous. If you
have a different instrumental line up, let us know, and we will advise
if appropriate for this contract. The company will provide airfares to
Sydney - Minimum duration for this contract would be one month, however
a longer period can be negotiated. There will be more opportunities onboard
this ship so please list your future availability if you are not available
for the October 24th opening. The salary is currently being discussed with
the company and we will have this information very soon. Meals, and one
twin share cabin (two single beds) are provided. Email me if interested
and I will send more details & Kevin's email address.

Dodo Sosoka Slovak Jazz Trio - Jozef Dodo Sosoka
(drums) Ondrej Kraj?ák (bass) Tomas Baros (piano)
This trio is performing at Burnie and Launceston
that I know of - see the Diary. Jozef Dodo Sosoka is an iconic jazz musician
in Slovakia, with over 45 years of performing as a drummer and percussion
soloist throughout Europe, USA and Africa. He also studied and performed
extensively in America, alongside many greats such as Lee Konitz, Charlie
Mariano and Lee Harper. The Slovak Music Fund awarded him with prizes for
Lifetime Achievement, International and Domestic Jazz Promotion and Faithfulness
to Jazz. His many-faceted career includes nurturing new, emerging young
talents. The Trio he brings to Australia presents two musicians who are
quickly establishing themselves on the European jazz scene. Ondrej Kraj?ák
is considered to be one of the best pianists in the Slovak Republic, with
influences across classical and jazz, including Bach, Bartók, Chopin
and Prokofiev on one hand and by the playing of Oscar Peterson, Gonzalo
Rubalcaba, Chick Corea and Adam Makovicz on the other. Ondrej has already
played with many famous musicians at home, as well as abroad. Tomas Baros
is a 21-year-old bass player from a musical family. He studied double bass
at the Prague Conservatorium and is inspired by players like Jimmy Garrison,
Ray Brown, Dave Holland and Ron Carter. In 2003 he received a special soloist
prize at a junior jazz competition. He belongs to the top echelons of the
Czech jazz scene and had already played with the cream of Czech, Slovak
and some European jazz musicians and singers, with both Montreaux Jazz
Festival and Warsaw Jazz Days to his credit. Established in 2006, the trio
will play a concert in Rome in September before traveling to Australia
and will also be performing at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2008, where
they have also played in 2005.
Centennial Hotel Jazz Carnival
October 26 - 28 Fri-Sunday, in Launceston, the
second Centennial Hotel Jazz Carnival will be held. Bands include Dodo
Sosoka Slovak Jazz Trio, Launceston Jazz Orchestra, Bob Venier and other
guests: Bookings Essential: Free admission, Dinner available from 5.30pm.
ph 6331 4957. It is wonderful how Rob and Jenna sponsor jazz the way they
have been doing over recent years. They have really good and reasonably
priced accommodation so there is no need to drive - you could have a great
weekend in Launceston and hear some top jazz.
MARK ISAACS
I see Mark Isaacs is coming to perform at Burnie
Oct 30 and at Hobart Jazz Club Oct 31st. This is a good chance to hear
one of Australia's famous musicians here in Tassie.

EARLY FRIDAY EVENINGS - HOBART
Kaye Payne advised me of this one which sounds
very good - Any one visiting the state should not miss the Friday session
(every Friday) in the courtyard at Salamanca (behind the arts centre)
"It's free, is run by the musicians, it has various
bands ranging from jazz to multi cultural types. Some of my favourites
are Red Hot Roosters, Tania Bosic and Shemozzle.
It runs from about 5.30pm till 7.30pm. It's outdoors
and usually happens rain or shine. they sell beer, hot and cold wine and
soft drinks. Lots of musos and all types hang there." - Thanks Kaye
JAZZ ON SUNDAYZ 1pm - 3pm - Hobart
Signal Station Cafe restaurant, Mount Nelson

DELORAINE SUNDAY AFTERNOON 29th April
We will hold our next jazz afternoon on Sunday
29th April at Glendalough, 4 East Barrack St Deloraine. It is a BYO food
and drink which keeps the price down. The barbecue will start about 12.30pm
or you may prefer to make up a picnic. Music starts at 1.30pm.. The
band will be
BRUNY ISLAND NEW ORLEANS JAZZ BAND. If it is
a nice day we can expand on to the lawns and courtyard, or if not we have
plenty of room inside for the band, dancing and dining. It is a pleasant
drive and day from Launceston or Devonport, and we will offer a prize to
whoever travels the furthest. This will probably be our last daytime event
until after winter so please try to come.
BURNIE ON THURSDAY NIGHTS

June/early July with a trio including Melbourne guitarist Jon Delaney and
we will be joined by Tasmanian pianist/accordionist Matt Boden. Matt passed
on your contact details.
The trio (Boden/Brazil/Delaney) is looking for
a few dates to play in Hobart, Launceston and surrounds between Fri 29
June and Wed 4 July.
Our group plays a mixture of styles - from
gypsy/trad jazz (in the vein of Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli)
to modern jazz standards and originals (in the vein of Stan Getz, Bill
Evans, Lee Konitz etc). This trio has an exciting lineup without drums
or bass which makes this group perfect for all venues.
The groups experience includes performances
with the likes of: Michelle Nicolle, Paul Williamson, Bob Sedergreen, Slava
Grigoryan, Ben Robertson and many more (including well known pop and rock
artists).
If you have any leads or tips for us, it
would be greatly appreciated! Please feel free to give me a phone call
on: 0411 355 309 or email me back at your convenience.
I look forward to hearing from you. Thank
you, Gideon Brazil gideonbrazil@optusnet.com.au

GET YOUR NEWS IN
Pat and I will be away for a little while soon
and the website TASJAZZ will not be able to be altered for a few weeks,
but you can beat that if you get in any changes to me this coming week.
Check the Diary below to make sure your event is in it.
MOUNT NELSON SIGNAL STATION RESTAURANT
I have been trying to get south to visit this
because it sounds really good. Proprietor, Joe Blake said: Our "audiences"
are actually better described as diners - that is, they come for lunch,
and they are mainly older, and prefer not to be "too close to the musicians";
so we let them enjoy it from afar, and the "jazz buffs", come now and then,
and sit in the jazz room, and listen eagerly, applauding. They make it
really fun. It is going well. Slowly building. Thanks for your support
and the publicity.
DEVONPORT JAZZ 2007
Elsa Kat has sent me details of Devonport Jazz
07 and they are on TASJAZZ if you would like to see them. It's always a
good weekend at a beaut venue. I noticed that the Sunday is a little different
and at the Town Hall, Centenary Court, Foyer, Federation Room - Free. This
must be in place of the lunch at the RSL Club of previous years.
This Friday
25th May Fri LUNCH & MUNCH at St Helens

HOBART WEEKENDS
I received a request from an interstate visitor
to tell her about jazz in Hobart May31 - June 3. Especially with the help
of Kaye Payne, I was able to put forward a few suggestions and I will print
them below, because you might like to make some suggestions that I have
missed:
The weekend that you mention May 31 June 3rd

on
Trout Bar Matthew Ives
Queen's Head Latin Jazz )
Confident of the following .....
FRIDAYS
The Queens Head Hotel on Friday nights has the
Jazz Brothers from 7pm till late.
Prince of Wales Hotel on a Friday night have
jazz or R&B.
FRIDAY NIGHTS - Kaye Payne told me "any
one visiting the state should not miss the Friday session (every Friday)

bands ranging from jazz to multi cultural types. some of my favourites
are Red Hot Roosters, Tania Bosic and Shemozzle.
it runs from about 5.30pm till 7.30pm. It's outdoors
and usually happens rain or shine. they sell beer, hot and cold wine and
soft drinks.
lots of musos and all types hang there.
SATURDAYS
Another thing is Salamanca Market down on the
waterfront Saturdays 9.00am - 2.00pm, but at its best 9 - 12. Suggest morning
coffee at one of the permanent coffee shops in the buildings along one
side of the market.
There are some nice cruises and some of them
can be combined with lunch on the water if you like. I often go on a lovely
little red boat (Captain Fell's) called the "Emmalisa".
Two of the above are not specifically jazz but
often there is some jazz at Salamanca Market.
Lizbon Bar generally has modern jazz on Saturday nights late.
SUNDAYS
Jive Cats (jazz and blues) at the New Sydney
Hotel in town
Black Coffee (Jazz mix) at the Queens Head Hotel North Hobart

SUE CATHCART MEMORIAL YOUTH JAZZ AWARDS
2007
I noticed that the Sue Cathcart was moved by
LJC to the Earl Arts Centre (NOT the Princess Theatre as previously advised).
It is on now, as I write, so hope all went well as usual.
Today is Sunday but the Examiner didn't publish
the results.
Launceston Jazz Club
On 29th May, Tuesday, Launceston Jazz Club
has BLUE GUM JAZZ BAND at the Royal Oak 8.00pm. Dinner Music Bruce Gourlay
(piano) and Anne Fitzgerald (vocals) at 6:30pm. Blue Gum, from Burnie,
is always good. The Diner Music is interesting with Bruce who is superb
on piano, and Anne Fitzgerald, the popular ABC radio announcer. She hasn't
been heard so often for a while and it will be good to get the chance on
Tuesday.

TASJAZZ NEWS - 10/4/07
There are plenty of things going on so I will do a run down of what
has been on the web site lately.

Kaye Payne advised me of this one which sounds very good - Any one
visiting the state should not miss the Friday session (every Friday) in
the courtyard at Salamanca (behind the arts centre)
"It's free, is run by the musicians, it has various bands ranging from
jazz to multi cultural types. Some of my favourites are Red Hot Roosters,
Tania Bosak and Shemozzle.

BURNIE ON THURSDAY NIGHTS
Viktor Zappner has been keeping up a really regular list of musicians

Hello All,
I have drawn together some notes from my emails and Tasjazz website
for you as a Newsletter
Sorry but I hardly ever send this snail mail now because it would cost
me too much. Please occasionally print it out and display it on some noticeboard
such as at your club venue.

I also have a link on the LJC page of Tasjazz which will take

SMOKERS
I know many of our musicians are smokers and we want to
see them around for many years to come. To help that the web site has a
link to a site which has some good ideas on the subject - INTERNET RADIO
SHOW/PODCAST
This week Joel Spitzer from www.WhyQuit.com talks to Fiona about overcoming
fears and taking permanent steps to quitting smoking that will benefit
your health - and your bank balance. Joel is a leading authority in smoking
cessation and prevention programs for over 30 years. To download
a copy of the show click Tasjazz link or go to:

BANDS WANTED
I received an email from a big Tasmanian event organizer a couple of
days ago and they were trying to include more jazz into the program for
2007. Because they obviously use the internet, I referred them to
the page TASMANIAN JAZZ BANDS of Tasjazz, and offered to help any other
way possible. I havent heard back from them so I guess they found plenty
there.

OFF THE AIR
My computer will be "off the air" for about
2 weeks, and during that time I will be unable to alter the web site Tasjazz.
Therefore if you would like to make some additions to the DIARY or the
NOTICEBOARD please email me by Friday 18/8/06 so that I can give your correct
info over the next couple of weeks.
DELORAINE JAZZ CLUB
We had hoped to have Graems Eames (SA trumpeter)
& Co on the 15th or 16th Sept, but they are booked in to perform at
Doherty's on that weekend. Since there is no other suitable date, we will
have to miss out on that booking. We suppose there will be ample opportunity
to hear this group at Launceston and also St Helens so it should cover
our Deloraine audiences. Because Deloraine is only 30 minutes away from
Launceston and/or Devonport, our DJC tries hard not to book a band which
is about to appear in either Dpt or Lton. This maintains the size of an
audience in our little town of 2,200 people, and we do not cut across the
audience at D or L.
NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY
It is likely that we will be running a Deloraine
New Year's Eve Party much the same as last year and more details will be
given very soon. If you enjoyed last year's prepare for the next one.
COMING UP
There are many good events coming up and to
check just go to the Tasjazz Diary. If your event is not listed, get in
touch with me - it's the cheapest publicity you'll be able to find anywhere.
(Let me know if you would like it to be cheaper!) Now that we are in the
tourist trade (B & B) I keep being surprised by how many use the DIARY
to work out where jazz is on in Tasmania on any given day.
CAN YOU HELP OTHERS?
A very big percentage of jazz followers are
on the Internet. However if you know of anyone who is not into I.T. please
offer to do an occasional print-out, especially of the DIARY page every
so often. If you want to see jazz prosper in the state please encourage
at least ONE PERSON in each club and Jazz Venue, to print out the first
page of the Jazz Diary, and display it for patrons. If they don't know
how to, could you do it for them?
TASJAZZ WEB SITE
NWJAS program at Burnie on Thursday evenings
has been updated thru till October.

& GRAEME EAMES from S.A. and also soon MIKE NOCK @ The Venue Hobart.
DELORAINE has now cancelled their Sept event
and I will look to see what we can replace that with asap
Let's hear from you,

FEWER NEWSLETTERS
I am still having difficulties sending out newsletters because my list
of addresses is so long, and my ISP has put restrictions on numbers in
case someone is sending out spam. Still I will battle on, even tho it will
take me about 10 attempts to send this and I will be forced to delete about
9 addresses until it successfully sends.
UPDATING THE WEB SITE
I have been updating the web site Tasjazz almost daily as news comes
in, usually by email. I make every effort to be accurate, but if you have
sent anything in I need you to PROOF READ and let me know of any errors.
If you are in a band, run a venue, are on a club c'ttee etc you also need
to PROOF READ anything involving you or yours.
Viktor Zappner has put out the coming dates for Burnie, Stage Door etc and I have put them on the BURNIE Club page plus the DIARY. Errors are rare but please spend the time to check that I have these right.
Hobart events have also recently been updated on the HOBART page and also the DIARY page .
Often if there is time I also mention your events on the NOTICEBOARD page, so this is worth checking, altho be warned that some of the jokes on the NOTICEBOARD page towards the bottom are a little risque and might offend the more sensitive minds.
DELORAINE CLUB
As always we go quiet in winter because of Deloraine's frosty nights,
and many of our members have told us that they don't venture out much during
winter. We usually miss July and August for these reasons.
DEVONPORT FESTIVAL
Wasn't this a spectacular event! Word has gone round and everyone is
realising how good the festival is, and obviously it is growing wonderfully.
Congratulations to Elsa, Viktor, Sharon and all those others who did so
much to ensure this success. A SPECIAL THANKS SHOULD BE GIVEN TO DEVONPORT
CITY COUNCIL for showing so much foresight and trust to get right behind
the venture. The businesses in the town and other residents should repay
the councillors at election times. Devonport and Clarence Councils certainly
show the way to other municipal bodies. Clubs can hold them up as an object
lesson to others.
TASJAZZ DIARY
One look at the DIARY shows how many great events are being held around
the state. The more I look at it I can see so many events that are worth
travelling from one end of this state to the other to hear - after all
nowhere is far away in Tasmania. Below I have mentioned a few at random
and I apologise to any I miss. Let me know and I will make special mention
on the net.
SPRING INTO JAZZ weekend party at Doherty's, St Helens in September
sound good,
Hot August Jazz - Hobart on Sunday 27th Aug
PHIL LANGDON & GRAEME EAMES will be heard in many areas as they
tour,
we have a visit from Mike Nock,
Hadley's Hotel has started its August SUNDAY JAZZ SERIES,
I belive the Mt Nelson Tavern is also having jazz on Sundays altho
I haven't heard which artists etc yet, and
Bronte Highland Village Jazz Festival (first weekend in October) is
another thing to look forward to.
NEW BABY
Congratulations to Dan Sulzberger
on the birth of a son recently. Stella and baby (Nathan?) doing well.
It is time you gave us an update Dan - someone in Hobart please let
him know my request. - Geoff
DONT GET CAUGHT
Watch out for this mobile phone scam
that is going around as it is very serious and can cost you a lot of money
if caught.
This scam is very similar to the one that was recently highlighted
as targetting home phone users in that you get a recorded message advising
you that you have won a prize and to hold the line to be transferred to
claim. The call is then redirected to a premium rate service where you
pay hefty rates per minute.
ST HELENS LAST WEEKEND IN JUNE
GUEST ARTIST IN JULY
Kate Meehan " Queen of the Blues"
and
Skip Landy, boogie woogie and rhythm
and blues piano, will be appearing South, North and North West of Tassie
between
28th July - 6/8/06 See DIARY
VIKTOR RETIRING
I suppose you noticed that Viktor Zappner's
retirement from the Education Department is imminent and his
farewell function will be held at the Somerset Surf Club on Friday, 30th
June 2006, 3:30pm5:30pm for Ed Dept. We all wish him well.
NEWS FROM ALLAN & MAL IN JAPAN
(I have edited a couple of items
but thought you might like to read this.)
Hi Geoff, The company are fine to work for altho they have very
little English, but we manage to communicate somehow.
The Japanese entertainers we work with are great, as are the crew on
the boat - very friendly and helpful, though also with little English.
We now have a collection of seven dictionary/phrase books/kanji primers
which we're spending a lot of time working on - so much more difficult
than European languages, as it's ALL unfamiliar.
We're managing to find our way about with not much trouble - lots of
gestures and frantic scrabbling through the phrase book!
The living quarters are palatial by Japanese standards. We're
on the seventh (and top) floor of Michigan House, about 5 minutes walk
from the offices and boat. We have 2 x 2 bedroom apartments
with a good sized kitchen, a separate toilet and a Japanese bathroom:-
this is a small room containing a very deep, but short bath and an area
beside it with a low stool on which
one sits to wash thoroughly before soaking in the bath. Traditionally,
the whole family shares the same bath water.
I'm not sure if we told you that our performance on the boat is part
of "Showtime", which features the life of Tom Sawyer in song and dance
- hence the costumes!
I believe we're supposed to be a bunch of Davey Crocketts! However,
the next group here will probably have a different theme - not sure how
often they change it.
So far, there has been no chance to arrange video or audio recording,
but something may come up.
As Allan said, we're having a great time - almost wish we'd agreed
to stay
six months!
Regards......Mal and Allan
